Thamana Aged 5

THE BEGINNING

Formerly known as Search For Thamana and founded by (then) 15 year old Taha Fathima Khan, this was a search for Thamana: a 5-year-old girl who went missing from Marina Beach, Chennai on 11th May 2011.

A Facebook Page was created to trace her. As a student journalist for the student edition of a leading daily (Times of India NIE) at the time, Taha called a news correspondent there (Ramya M). She listened patiently to the story, called the editor and by the next day there was an article in the paper. This lead to a cascade of events. RJ Sanobar Sultana saw the story and held a segment about missing children on her show. Eventually, various major media outlets such as Times of India, NDTV & The New Indian Express began covering the story. There was non-stop coverage of Thamana's case. She went from one of many missing children to the face of missing kids across the country. In fact, other cases sought similar public involvement.

This attention eventually led to finding Thamana, abandoned at GH Chennai, 8 days later.

Thamana was a victim of kidnapping and suspected child-trafficking. She was saved by the attention that this social media-based initiative had stirred. In fact, as a result of this watch towers were erected and surveillance was increased in crowded places in the city.

The power of social media was realised. Therefore, Taha decided to further this cause to advocate for children's rights.

THE PROJECT

Few children are as fortunate as Thamana. Many end up as victims of unthinkable crimes. The surprising ignorance of this fact is the the reason we need an open discourse about Children's Rights. Search for Thamana was renamed the Child Awareness Project (CAP) in 2016 to better serve this purpose.

We, at CAP, strive to raise awareness about atrocities against children that impinge Children's Rights, including abduction, child trafficking, child abuse, child labour, bullying (cyber and offline) and many others.

We also aim to celebrate childhood in its pure and innocent form and to applaud those children and teenagers who make a difference to society.

For our work, we received numerous awards & recognition.

The open quotation mark, in our logo, signifies that the conversation (about Children's Rights) must start NOW.

Our hashtag, #ChildProofingTheWorld, highlights our agenda to make a safer World for children by means of spreading awareness. We have also started a Twibbon campaign to emphasise this.

Join the cause to help increase awareness about children's rights and to support a safer world for children.

THE SCOPE

We, at CAP, believe that engaging the youth is as important as empowering them, therefore apart from advocating for children's rights, we also encourage young people to take a stand in their own communities. We have launched 2 youth programs that serve to do just that. Moreover, we are also working and designing various workshops/campaigns/activities. Each year, we will target a broad theme incorporating rights from the UNCRC, as well as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and carry out numerous workshops/campaigns/activities throughout the year. Questionnaires will be used to judge the efficacy of each workshop/campaign/activity and to modify future workshops/campaigns/activities. The target audience will be set to better suit the theme and style of each workshop/campaign/activity (e.g. general public, children & youth, parents/teachers). Apart from workshops we also plan to have awareness drives in public places. We are looking at non-financial institutional collaborations to increase awareness about issues that affect young people. Currently one such collaboration is underway. Our future scope includes, providing volunteering opportunities in India. This is the Problem-solving Phase that will follow the previously detailed Awareness & Prevention Phase of our long-term goals.
